Associate Professor (Composition and Creative Practice)

About the role

The Yong Siew Toh Conservatory at the National University of Singapore is looking for an experienced music professional to provide strategic academic and artistic leadership in composition, creative practice and artistic research. The successful candidate will help shape an integrated model of conservatory education that links creative practice, scholarly inquiry, teaching and curriculum development. This tenure‑track associate professor position will contribute to the Conservatory’s reputation as a leading centre for contemporary music in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Key responsibilities

• Provide academic, artistic and strategic leadership for the integrated area of Composition and Creative Practice.
• Design, teach and develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses in composition, music theory, artistic research and interdisciplinary practice.
• Develop pedagogical approaches that connect theoretical understanding with creative practice and professional preparation.
• Lead curriculum development, programme review and integration of creative practice across the Conservatory.
• Supervise and mentor students at all levels, fostering artistic distinction and professional development.
• Build regional and international artistic partnerships, strengthening connections between Southeast Asia and the global contemporary music community.
• Maintain an active, internationally recognised programme of creative work that informs teaching and research.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree in Composition, Artistic Research or a related musical practice.
• Minimum ten years of successful teaching experience in a conservatory or university setting.
• Internationally recognised record as a composer‑scholar or creative practitioner with substantial creative output, publications and collaborations.
• Proven experience in academic leadership, curriculum design, programme review and institutional service.
• Demonstrated ability to develop regional and international networks that advance contemporary music in Southeast Asia.
• Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills for collaborative academic leadership.
