Deputy Director – Defence Relations (Joint)

About the role

The Deputy Director (Defence Relations – Joint) works closely with MINDEF and the Singapore Armed Forces to shape and execute defence‑relations strategy, plan high‑level engagements and ensure alignment with national policy objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor political, geopolitical and military developments in key countries and assess their impact on SAF defence‑relations policy.
• Develop deep expertise on each country’s strategic dynamics, key issues, personalities and perceptions of Singapore/SAF.
• Identify emerging trends, conduct research and present informed recommendations across MINDEF and SAF.
• Lead the preparation of briefing folders and briefings for SAF leadership on defence‑relations engagements.
• Interface with MINDEF Policy to shape and review SAF’s defence‑relations approaches.
• Manage the defence‑relations calendar of events for identified SAF leadership and maintain an overarching view of engagements across MINDEF and SAF.

Required profile

• Minimum 15 years of relevant experience.
• Excellent written and spoken English; proficiency in a second language is advantageous.
• Strong interest in Singapore’s political, geopolitical, defence and security developments.
• Good appreciation of regional security issues and developments in relevant countries/regions.
• Strategic thinking ability with capacity to deliver quick analysis and assessments.
• High maturity and interpersonal skills for networking with internal and external stakeholders.
• Proven team‑leadership experience, capable of developing talent and achieving collective outcomes.
• Cultural sensitivity and ability to translate strategic objectives into practical implementation.
• Professional, creative approach to advancing SAF interests.
