About the role
The Sputter Equipment Development Engineering (SpEDE) team at Seagate is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to develop, test and document mechanical solutions for next‑generation sputter process equipment used in HDD media manufacturing. You will work in a collaborative environment, moving concepts through prototype builds, testing, and validation to production‑ready systems.
Key responsibilities
- Design, prototype, and validate transport mechanisms, vacuum systems, and process stations such as deposition chambers, substrate heating, cooling, and cleaning systems.
- Own technical assignments that include research, design, fabrication, modification, and evaluation of mechanical and electromechanical devices.
- Create and release accurate 3D solid models, engineering drawings, and related documentation.
- Participate in design reviews, providing input on design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), reliability and serviceability.
- Collaborate with local vendors and internal stakeholders to support fabrication, resolve technical issues, and ensure timely delivery of parts.
- Support prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, verification, validation and transition of designs into production.
Required profile
- Strong ability to select appropriate materials, interfaces and surface finishes for precision and clean‑room environments.
- Proven skill in producing clear engineering specifications, drawings and documentation for cross‑functional teams and external suppliers.
- Methodical problem‑solving approach using prototypes, test data, analysis and experimentation.
- Curiosity, creativity and a growth mindset with a commitment to continuous learning and process improvement.
Required skills
- 3D solid modeling (CAD) and engineering drawing creation.
- Mechanical design of transport mechanisms, vacuum systems and sputter process stations.
