Mechanical Engineer II – Scientific Instruments

About the role

Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to contribute to the design and development of sophisticated scientific instruments and laboratory equipment. You will work within a cross‑functional team, turning concepts into reliable, manufacturable products that support a healthier, cleaner, and safer world.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the mechanical lead on assigned projects and adhere to project timelines.
• Generate conceptual proposals and conduct mechanical design reviews.
• Create 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, Pro‑Engineer) and establish modular designs with complete BOM structures.
• Develop sub‑assembly test plans, execute tests, and report results.
• Ensure designs are robust, DFM‑compliant, and integrated into the overall mechanical architecture.
• Collaborate with vendors on design for manufacturability and cost negotiations to meet COGS targets.
• Contribute innovations to the R&D portal and support technology development initiatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in mechanical product development.
• Proven track record through at least one full product life‑cycle design.
• Experience with casting, machining, plastic molding, sheet‑metal fabrication, and DFM practices.
• Strong understanding of GD&T and project management fundamentals.

Required skills

• SolidWorks and Pro‑Engineer (Creo) for 3D CAD modeling.
• Mechanism design and modular architecture development.
• Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and cost‑to‑design analysis.
• CFD/flow and thermal simulation experience.
• Mechanical design experience in medical or life‑sciences product environments.
