Senior Generative AI Engineer – Foundry R&D

About the role

Mastercard’s Foundry R&D team is seeking a senior engineer to design and deliver backend services that expose generative AI capabilities. The role focuses on building scalable APIs and micro‑services that route user queries to large language models, process data securely, and return results efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Java (Spring Boot) or Python (Django/FastAPI) backend services that provide generative AI features.
• Collaborate with data‑science and ML engineering teams to productionise models, handling input/output formats, external API calls, and response caching.
• Ensure performance, reliability, and observability through unit/integration testing, profiling, monitoring (CloudWatch, Prometheus), and alerting.
• Work in an agile, cross‑functional team with product managers, designers, and data scientists to translate requirements into well‑designed APIs.
• Mentor junior engineers, enforce clean code practices, and improve CI/CD tooling and documentation.

Required profile

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with a strong focus on Java or Python.
• Hands‑on experience integrating AI/ML models, especially generative AI and large language models.
• Proven ability to design versioned, authenticated RESTful APIs and work with relational databases (SQL) and optionally NoSQL stores or message queues.
• Analytical mindset, curiosity about emerging technologies, and a collaborative attitude.
