Mechanical Engineer II – Scientific Instruments

About the role

As a Mechanical Engineer II at Thermo Fisher Scientific you will contribute to the design and development of sophisticated scientific instruments and laboratory equipment. You will work within cross‑functional teams to create reliable, manufacturable mechanical systems that support the company’s mission of making the world healthier, cleaner and safer.

Key responsibilities

• Generate and present conceptual proposals and support mechanical design reviews.
• Create 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer) and develop modular designs with complete bill of materials.
• Develop sub‑assembly test plans, execute tests and report results.
• Ensure designs are integrated into the overall mechanical architecture with robustness and adaptability.
• Collaborate with vendors on design for manufacturability, cost negotiation and achieve target COGS.
• Contribute to technology innovation and maintain updates in the R&D portal.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in product development life‑cycle and mechanical design.
• Proven ability to manage projects from concept through production.

Required skills

• Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer).
• Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience with casting, machining, plastics molding and sheet‑metal design.
• Mechanism design and basic to advanced CFD/flow simulation.
• Knowledge of mechanical design for medical or life‑science products.
