Researcher – AI & Large Language Models

About the role

Microsoft Research Asia Pacific is seeking exceptional researchers to advance the frontier of artificial intelligence. You will work on large language models, multimodal AI, and AI systems, creating next‑generation models and products that impact billions of users worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct foundational and frontier research in Large Language Models, Multimodal LLMs, Agentic AI, and AI infrastructure.
• Design, develop, and evaluate novel model architectures, training methodologies, and scalable inference solutions.
• Build AI‑native prototypes and demos that translate research breakthroughs into tangible user experiences.
• Collaborate with product engineering, applied science, and platform teams across Microsoft to transfer research into production‑grade products.
• Publish influential papers, contribute to open‑source projects, and engage with the broader research community.
• Identify high‑impact research directions and propose initiatives aligned with Microsoft’s mission.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Strong quantitative background in mathematics, physics, or statistics.
• Solid foundation in linear algebra, probability, and optimization with proven analytical skills.
• Demonstrated ability to learn independently and drive research projects forward.

Required skills

• Proficient programming in Python.
• Proficient programming in C++ (or C).
• Strong mathematical skills (linear algebra, probability, optimization).
