Counsel – Legal Advisor

About the role

The Associate Counsel provides legal expertise and support across a range of matters for ABS, a global leader in marine classification and safety services. Reporting to senior legal executives, the role involves delivering practical legal solutions that align with the company’s mission to ensure safety, reliability and environmental stewardship at sea.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in the development and interpretation of ABS policies.
• Conduct legal projects and research under the direction of senior counsel.
• Provide advice on employment and labor, intellectual property, data privacy, insurance, litigation and bankruptcy matters.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts and other legal documents.
• Prepare correspondence, legal memoranda and reports.
• Coordinate with external counsel on various legal issues.
• Identify potential legal risks and devise proactive strategies.

Required profile

• LL.B. or J.D. in Jurisprudence.
• 2–6 years of relevant legal experience.
• Interest in the marine industry and ability to understand its regulatory environment.
• Strong negotiation and human‑relations abilities.
• Capability to manage and guide support staff.
• Willingness to acquire knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System (for internal candidates).
