Product Engineer 2 (Optics)

About the role

Illumina is hiring a Product Engineer 2 (Optics) to support product lifecycle activities, including new product introduction, product transfer and ongoing manufacturing operations. The role ensures product quality, yield and compliance through engineering evaluation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement, working across functions to move products smoothly from design to production.

Key responsibilities

• Support and drive product transfer into manufacturing, perform data trending and analysis, and apply FMEA, DOE and statistical analysis to optimise quality and reduce costs.
• Drive process improvements, cost reduction and product sustaining activities.
• Manage Engineering Change Requests and Notifications (CRs and CNs), including updates to work instructions and test requirements.
• Maintain documentation such as engineering drawings, BOMs, test reports, assembly procedures and validation plans.
• Take part in continuous improvement and operational excellence programmes, and collaborate frequently with other functions, with occasional travel to other sites.
• In optics: perform optical alignment, characterisation and subsystem testing with minimal supervision, analyse test data and interpret results, and work with suppliers on moderately complex technical issues.
• Lead engineering tasks or sub-projects, give feedback to design teams on manufacturability and testability, assist in design validation, and take part in design reviews and risk assessments.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of related experience, or an advanced degree without experience, or equivalent experience.
• Experience in optical systems or optics-related manufacturing engineering.
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and to work independently.
• Good understanding of BOM structuring and Engineering Change Management.
• Safety and compliance discipline.

Required skills

• Proficiency in optical measurement tools and running test setups independently.
• Proficiency in engineering drawings and 2D CAD.
• Experience managing supplier deliverables and resolving issues.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Plus: Zemax, CodeV, LabView, Python, SAP and PLM systems.
