Research Assistant – AI‑Enabled Seismic Data Analysis

About the role

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Assistant to support AI‑enabled seismic data analysis, including field operations and data processing.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct geophysical fieldwork, deploying and maintaining seismic stations for data acquisition.
• Develop, implement, and optimise AI algorithms to automatically extract surface‑wave dispersion curves from continuous recordings.
• Design and maintain automated processing pipelines for large‑scale seismic datasets from Singapore and Japan.
• Manage, curate, and quality‑control seismic datasets, ensuring integrity and compliance.
• Integrate AI‑based dispersion analysis with conventional seismic processing for imaging and subsurface characterisation.
• Evaluate and validate AI models using synthetic and field data, benchmarking performance.
• Prepare technical documentation, software packages, research reports and present findings at meetings and conferences.
• Collaborate with researchers, students and external partners to achieve project objectives.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in geophysics, computer science, AI, data science, mathematics, software engineering or a related field.
• Strong programming ability in Python and experience with software development for data analysis or machine learning.
• Knowledge of AI and machine‑learning techniques, with experience in deep‑learning frameworks.
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills for developing computational solutions to scientific problems.
• Proficiency in geophysical field surveys, seismic data acquisition and processing.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
