Staff Software Engineer, Tech Platform

About the role

Airwallex, a fintech company with co-headquarters in San Francisco and Singapore, is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join its Tech Platform team. The team builds the foundation of the company's technology, creating scalable, high-performance systems that power global commerce. You will work on mission-critical systems and help shape the infrastructure of a growing fintech.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and refine application infrastructure that removes technical bottlenecks, reduces developer maintenance overhead and accelerates business innovation.
• Solve complex, high-scale problems using technologies such as reactive programming, Temporal, vector databases, distributed systems and advanced gateway solutions.
• Evaluate emerging solutions and guide the company's long-term architectural decisions for scalability, efficiency and global resilience.

Required profile

• Strong proficiency in backend languages such as Java, Go, Rust, Lua or Python and their frameworks.
• Proven hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch and logical replication, with a deep understanding of performance, scalability and data consistency in distributed systems.
• Strong familiarity with NGINX, OpenResty, Envoy, APISIX, Kong and Istio, including traffic routing, load balancing and API gateway management.
• Experience with API lifecycle management and API security, including authentication, authorization and threat mitigation.

Preferred qualifications

• API Gateway performance tuning, including CPU flame graphs.
• Service mesh experience with Istio, and API security such as mTLS, DDoS and SQL injection mitigation.
• Open source evaluation and adoption.
