Assistant Manager, Lab Operations

About the role

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is looking for an Assistant Manager to oversee the Computer Aided Design (CAD) laboratory. The role combines technical support, administrative duties and safety management to ensure smooth teaching and research activities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical and administrative support for all undergraduate and research activities.
• Carry out planned teaching support for laboratory classes, experiments and projects.
• Maintain and configure computer hardware to keep it in good working condition.
• Manage and troubleshoot hardware and software issues on computers and Windows servers.
• Procure laboratory software, equipment and consumables in line with university purchasing guidelines.
• Handle laboratory asset management and maintain accurate inventory records.
• Ensure safety practices and conduct risk assessments for all equipment and processes.
• Perform housekeeping and ensure the lab’s resources are sufficient for teaching and research.

Required profile

• A recognized degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics or Manufacturing Engineering.
• 2‑3 years of experience in a CAD/CAM environment.
• 1‑2 years of experience administering and configuring computer systems (IT knowledge) is preferred.
• Knowledge of CAD/CAE software such as SolidWorks, SolidCAM, Ansys and Autodesk Fusion.
• Strong computer hardware and software troubleshooting abilities.
• Understanding of workplace safety practices.
• Ability to support and assist students during teaching sessions.
• Demonstrates initiative, willingness to learn and a focus on continuous improvement.
