Director, HNW Underwriting

About the role

A recruitment group is looking for a seasoned underwriting professional to lead high-value life insurance underwriting for its Bermuda HNW/UHNW book. The role takes ownership of complex cases from start to finish, including medical, financial and due diligence review, and acts as a trusted advisor to less experienced underwriters and a key liaison with reinsurance partners.

Key responsibilities

• Own full-cycle underwriting decisions for Bermuda policies within delegated authority, handling large, intricate HNW/UHNW submissions with cross-border ownership structures and large face amounts
• Evaluate medical and financial risk factors such as source of wealth, insurable interest and layered ownership, and interpret clinical records to reach sound conclusions
• Design evidence-gathering approaches and produce clear, defensible underwriting rationale
• Take part in claims reviews and evaluate policy changes after issuance to ensure consistency with underwriting standards
• Flag fraud or anti-selection risks early, analyse portfolio metrics and turn findings into recommendations for senior leadership
• Work with brokers, distribution partners and case managers, mentor junior underwriters and help build best practices across the team

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree; Business, Risk Management, Actuarial Science or similar fields preferred
• 10+ years in life underwriting, including at least 4 years focused on HNW or large-case work
• Recognized life insurance credential (FLMI, ALU or equivalent)
• Experience working with reinsurers, legal, compliance and distribution channels (agency, bancassurance, brokerage)
• Strong written and spoken English; exposure to multi-jurisdictional or offshore insurance markets is a plus
