Engineering Director, Payments Platform

About the role

Airwallex is seeking an Engineering Director to lead the teams responsible for building and operating critical components of its Payments Platform. This senior role combines people leadership, technical direction, and delivery ownership across multiple global markets.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the Payments Platform vision, owning strategy, architecture, and roadmap for processing, routing, settlement, reconciliation and partner integrations.
• Lead and grow a world‑class engineering organization, managing Engineering Managers and senior technical talent across several squads.
• Provide architectural direction for high‑volume, mission‑critical payment systems, setting standards for reliability, observability, security, scalability and developer productivity.
• Set clear OKRs, manage execution across concurrent initiatives and balance short‑term delivery with long‑term platform investments.
• Partner with Product, Commercial, Risk, Compliance and regional engineering leaders to align technology with business outcomes and regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in engineering leadership roles.
• Proven track record of managing Engineering Managers or Leads and scaling high‑performing teams.
• Strong product thinking and ability to collaborate closely with Product Management on roadmaps and business outcomes.
• Deep technical fluency in software architecture and system design for large‑scale, complex distributed systems.
• Experience in fintech, payments or other regulated financial services where correctness and data integrity are critical.
