Head of Data

About the role

CuspAI is building a frontier AI platform to accelerate materials discovery. The Head of Data will define and own the data strategy, partnering with world‑leading AI researchers, materials scientists and external data providers. This senior role reports directly to the leadership team and shapes the data foundation for breakthrough innovations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute CuspAI’s data strategy, aligning research and commercial priorities with a clear roadmap of required data assets.
• Lead data acquisition initiatives, including commercial licensing, academic collaborations, high‑throughput computational generation, and internal lab data creation.
• Own the end‑to‑end data generation pipeline, from experimental design and cost modelling to delivery of ML‑ready assets.
• Manage relationships with research leads, partnerships team, finance and external data partners to ensure strategic value and integration.
• Build, grow and mentor a multidisciplinary Data team, setting standards for data quality, provenance and interoperability.

Required profile

• Significant experience leading data strategy or acquisition in a research‑intensive organization (AI lab, deep‑tech, materials/chemicals, national lab, or research institute).
• PhD or equivalent research experience in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field.
• Proven track record of originating and closing external data partnerships, including due diligence and legal negotiations.
• Budget ownership experience with strong commercial judgement.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and scale technical teams.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• SQL and data modelling concepts.
• Understanding of ML training data requirements.
• ETL/ELT processes, schema validation, data contracts and workflow orchestration.
• Familiarity with materials data resources such as ICSD, Cambridge Structural Database, NOMAD, Materials Project.
• Experience with high‑throughput computational tools (e.g., VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO).
