Marine Risk Engineer

About the role

Markel is looking for a Marine Risk Engineer to build market presence and respect in the line of business it underwrites, developing it further within agreed business plan parameters while adhering to its underwriting authority and focusing on the agreed combined loss ratio target. The role sits within the APAC marine underwriting function.

Key responsibilities

• Liaise with the APAC marine underwriting teams on new risk submissions and provide engineering-focused reviews of the technology used.
• Review survey information and attend sites or review client risk management information to advise clients on risk mitigation strategies.
• Support the APAC Marine Team's thought leadership, including conference attendance and speaking as required.
• Carry out ad hoc technology reviews covering design, track record, natural catastrophe exposures and related issues.
• Complete desktop and risk surveys for projects and follow market to help underwriters understand the risk profile.
• Identify potential revenue streams for the engineering team from existing clients and the pipeline, devise a business plan and agree budgets with the Regional Marine Teams and the Head of Singapore.
• Work with the claims team on larger claims to understand loss trends and assist in claims adjustments and negotiations with OEMs.
• Collaborate with existing engineers to deliver expert client support, develop a common reporting and risk scoring framework, and help underwriters select risks and understand new technology.

Required profile

• At least 8 years of experience as a marine risk engineer, preferably with a naval architecture background in industry and/or an insurance company.
• Specific marine and engineering experience with a technical grasp of current risk factors and underwriting concerns.
• Strong report writing skills.
• An active, collaborative team player who contributes in an open environment.
