Principal Backend Software Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Principal Backend Software Engineer to lead the design and development of scalable, reliable backend systems for the Transaction Tribe at foodpanda, part of the Delivery Hero Group. You will shape architecture, mentor engineers and drive innovation across our global food‑delivery platform.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, development and implementation of backend services, ensuring scalability and maintainability.
• Design reusable APIs and shared modules that serve multiple products.
• Collaborate with product, UX and frontend teams to align backend capabilities with business goals.
• Monitor performance, tune databases, caching layers, message queues and ensure high availability.
• Integrate security and compliance measures into system design.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
• Research emerging technologies and drive long‑term innovation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 10+ years of backend engineering experience with large‑scale, distributed systems.
• Proven track record of guiding engineering strategy at an organizational level.
• Experience leading and mentoring senior and mid‑level engineers.

Required skills

• Go (preferred backend language).
• Microservices architecture and API design.
• CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and deployment workflows.
• Databases, caching, message queues and event‑driven architectures.
• Cloud platforms and infrastructure.
• Concurrency, distributed computing and performance tuning.
• Reliability engineering and observability tools.
