Project Officer – Hardware Development for Insect‑Robot Systems

About the role

The School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at NTU is seeking a Project Officer to lead the development of insect‑computer hybrid robot control systems. You will design, build, and test wireless sensor‑backpacks that interface with living insects for navigation and environmental monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Design and fabricate wirelessly controlled sensor‑backpacks mounted on living insects to stimulate neurons and muscles and to report environmental data.
• Develop firmware, algorithms, data structures and user interfaces for remote control of the sensor‑backpack.
• Integrate custom algorithms into the insect‑computer hybrid robot operation and conduct performance testing on live insects.
• Prepare technical documentation and deliver presentations of project outcomes.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical & Electronics, or Computer Engineering.
• Experience in PCB design and fabrication.
• Proficiency in C/C++ programming for embedded systems.
• Experience with real‑time operating system development.
• Familiarity with wireless communication technologies such as BLE, Sub‑GHz, or UWB (advantageous).
• Knowledge of C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python (advantageous).
• Understanding of insect anatomy and physiology (advantageous).
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
