Job description
About the role
The National Institute of Education (NIE) is looking for a Research Assistant on a 6-month contract within its Natural Sciences & Science Education Department. The project develops a multiplexed fluorescent nanosensor array for AI-enabled rapid detection of gut health biomarkers, moving an optical nanosensor platform from the laboratory toward a clinical diagnostic tool. Strong performance may lead to contract renewal, involvement in spin-off venture conversion or mentorship toward a PhD in chemical biology and biosensing.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct optical assays, including fluorescence and absorbance measurements, to evaluate nanosensor array responses to gut health biomarkers and metabolites.
- Perform biofluid and chemical preparation and routine biological sample assays while following BSL-2 biosafety protocols and using Biosafety Cabinets correctly.
- Record, analyse and document experimental data to support device optimisation and translational milestones.
- Help translate bench data for venture design workshops, startup commercialisation and clinical partner updates.
- Assist with baseline equipment setup, reagent inventory and biosafety compliance, and carry out other administrative duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- Careful, systematic laboratory work and reliability in following established protocols.
- Proactive, willing to learn and able to work independently after training.
- Strong interest in deep-tech commercialisation and venture design.
Preferred
- Experience in a BSL-2 laboratory, including operation and maintenance of Class II Biosafety Cabinets.
- Prior experience with biological assays, biofluids or metabolite biosensing.
- Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques such as fluorescence, Raman and UV-Vis spectrophotometry.
- Data analysis tools (Excel, Origin, Python).
- Exposure to deep-tech commercialisation, such as entrepreneurial bootcamps or technology transfer projects.
Applications (internal and external) are made through Workday; only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and the closing date is 14 calendar days after posting.
