About the role
The Energy Research Institute at NTU seeks a Research Associate to address challenges of large‑scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) deployment. You will work on control, modelling, and diagnostic methods for BESS operating in unconventional grids.
Key responsibilities
- Develop control strategies to improve BESS performance and provide ancillary grid services.
- Model and simulate BESS within large, inverter‑rich grid networks.
- Test BESS hardware in a high‑power laboratory (1500 Vdc, 350 kW).
- Assemble, commission, and operate the BESS test facility, including PLC programming and HMI development.
- Create and validate test methods to assess battery pack health and remaining useful life.
Required profile
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of hands‑on experience designing, simulating, and testing power electronic converters and battery systems.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with excellent organisational and time‑management abilities.
Required skills
- Power electronic converter design and control.
- Grid integration and electrical power systems.
- Lithium‑ion battery technology and testing at cell and pack level.
- PLC programming and rapid controller prototyping (TwinCAT, NI cRIO, dSpace, Typhoon HIL).
- Circuit and system‑level simulation (Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS, PSS/E).
- Familiarity with BESS standards: UL9540, UL1741, NFPA855, IEC62933.
