Research Associate (Earth Science/Geophysics)

About the role

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is looking for a Research Associate to use dense seismic arrays, especially distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), for hazards and coastal monitoring. The post is supervised by Asst Prof Voon Hui Lai and sits within an interdisciplinary school linking geosciences, ecology, society and Earth systems.

Key responsibilities

• Develop methodologies to detect, characterise and model seismic, coastal hazards and other environmental signals recorded on dense seismic and fibre-optic sensing data.
• Plan and conduct field deployments using seismic and DAS systems.
• Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.
• Provide scientific leadership and mentorship to undergraduate students and Research Assistants.
• Build and maintain collaborations with project team members, researchers and external partners.

Required profile

• Masters degree in Earth science, geophysics or a related field.
• Proven experience analysing and interpreting dense seismic array data and/or DAS data, and planning and running geophysical field deployments.
• Strong track record of publishing in leading Tier 1 journals and preparing manuscripts for peer review.
• Excellent written and spoken English, and the ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Seismic source detection, seismoacoustics, signal processing, waveform modelling and/or environmental seismology.
• Strong programming in Python or MATLAB.
