Research Fellow – Child Development & AI in Education

About the role

The National Institute of Education invites applications for a 1‑year Research Fellow position at the Centre for Research in Child Development. The role sits at the intersection of developmental science, educational research, and emerging AI technologies, aiming to generate evidence that guides age‑appropriate AI use for children.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a centre‑level initiative to synthesize developmental science research and produce guidance on age‑appropriate AI in educational settings.
• Conduct comprehensive reviews of international policy guidelines and identify developmental competencies relevant to AI literacy.
• Design and carry out empirical studies (interviews, focus groups, surveys) with children, parents, educators, and other stakeholders.
• Perform horizon‑scanning of AI, education policy, and child development research to spot emerging questions and new project opportunities.
• Prepare research reports, policy briefs, academic publications, and other knowledge‑translation materials for diverse audiences.
• Organise stakeholder engagement activities such as workshops, roundtables, and research‑sharing sessions.
• Support fellow researchers with data analysis, manuscript preparation, grant applications, and collaborative outputs.

Required profile

• PhD in Developmental Psychology, Education, Child Development, Learning Sciences, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of developmental science and experience conducting systematic or scoping literature reviews.
• Experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research involving children, parents, or educators.
• Demonstrated record of publishing in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Excellent analytical, synthesis, writing, and communication abilities, with a talent for translating research into accessible recommendations.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with internal and external partners.
