Research Fellow – Coral Microbial Ecology

About the role

The Case Research Team in SCELSE is looking for a research fellow with strong field techniques and molecular expertise to study coral‑microbe interactions. The role involves DNA/RNA isolation from marine bacteria and seagrasses, genome sequencing and metagenomic analyses to support coral resilience research.

Key responsibilities

• Perform manipulative experiments with corals and bacteria to assess thermal and disease tolerance.
• Sample, manipulate and analyse corals using physiological and molecular methods.
• Collaborate with marine scientists to identify beneficial microbes that enhance coral resilience.

Required profile

• PhD in marine microbiology or marine microbial ecology.
• Competence in molecular microbiology and bioinformatics.
• Experience culturing bacteria and corals for laboratory and field work.
• Ability to conduct DNA extraction, purification and quality control for community analysis.
• Proficiency with PAM‑fluorometry, flow cytometry and microscopy.
• Marine field experience, including swimming, intertidal work and boat travel, with BSL‑2 safety handling.
