Research Fellow – Coral Reef Ecosystems

About the role

The Earth Observatory of Singapore at Nanyang Technological University seeks a post‑doctoral Research Fellow to study coral reef ecosystems, focusing on coral bleaching, carbonate budgets and large‑scale ecological datasets across South and Southeast Asia.

Key responsibilities

• Lead research, analysis and peer‑reviewed publications on coral reef ecology, bleaching events and carbonate budgeting.
• Analyse extensive regional photo‑quadrat, photogrammetry, benthic and environmental datasets to uncover spatial patterns and temporal trends.
• Formulate frontier research questions and apply robust quantitative methods.
• Plan and execute regional scientific‑diving field campaigns, fostering collaborations with diverse partners.
• Provide expert coral and benthic community identification and ensure data quality control.
• Prepare manuscripts, reports and presentations while mentoring junior researchers.

Required profile

• PhD in marine science, marine ecology or a related discipline.
• Strong publication record in coral reef ecology or related fields.
• Expertise in coral and benthic community identification with scientific‑diving experience.
• Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diver certification.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis and handling large ecological datasets using R or Python.
• Experience with photo‑quadrat, photogrammetry and/or Agisoft Metashape is highly desirable.
• Excellent scientific writing, communication and independent research skills; familiarity with Southeast Asian reef systems is a plus.
