Job description
About the role
The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), a University Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University, is recruiting a Research Fellow for a new PUB-funded project with the Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute Singapore. The project collects data from the Johor Strait to help protect Singapore's coastline against climate change, studying sediment budgets and source-to-sink relationships through an international, multi-institutional programme.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and apply hydrodynamic and sediment transport models for fluvial-marine systems, including river channels, intertidal mangrove and mudflat areas and adjacent subtidal environments.
- Conduct and analyse field measurements of flow conditions, turbulence, seabed and water sedimentology and related environmental parameters in Singapore's coastal and marine environments.
- Quantify relationships between hydrodynamic intensity and sediment erosion, flux and deposition patterns.
- Support physics-based models that predict sediment source-to-sink pathways and spatial variation in erosion and accretion rates (sediment budget).
- Integrate modelling outputs with sedimentology, geochemistry and other datasets such as satellite imagery from the broader CFI project team.
- Prepare technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations and project deliverables.
- Maintain accurate data collection and prepare the annual Data Management Plan.
- Disseminate results with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
Required profile
- PhD in Oceanography, Sediment Dynamics, Ocean Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related geoscience discipline.
- Strong publication record and ability to work independently.
- Team player able to work in a multicultural project setting; excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Required skills
- Strong background in hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling.
- Fluvial, estuarine, mangrove, intertidal and shallow marine field measurement experience is highly desirable.
- Numerical modelling tools such as Delft3D, SWAT or equivalent are advantageous.
- Field instrumentation such as ADCPs, current meters, turbidity sensors and sediment traps is advantageous.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB or similar tools; AI/machine learning methods are highly advantageous.
