Research Fellow – Organic Chemistry

About the role

The School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at NTU is seeking a Research Fellow to develop sustainable synthetic methods for high‑value glycosides. The project focuses on traceless activation and radical coupling to enable selective carbohydrate modification.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute multi‑step syntheses of carbohydrates, glycosides, and glycomimetics.
• Develop selective sugar‑modification strategies using traceless activation and radical coupling, including photochemical or electrochemical approaches.
• Plan protecting‑group strategies and control chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity in complex substrates.
• Purify intermediates and final products using flash chromatography, preparative HPLC, recrystallization, and perform rigorous analytical characterization.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry or a related discipline.
• Hands‑on experience in carbohydrate chemistry, sugar modification, and synthesis of glycosides or glycomimetics.

Required skills

• Design and optimisation of radical coupling reactions (photochemical/electrochemical).
• Protecting‑group strategies, chemoselectivity, regio‑ and stereoselectivity control.
• Product purification using flash chromatography, preparative HPLC, recrystallisation.
• Structure elucidation with 1D/2D NMR, LC‑MS/HRMS, HPLC/UPLC.
