Research Fellow – Single‑Photon LiDAR Systems

About the role

The Centre for Disruptive Photonic Technologies at Nanyang Technological University is seeking a Research Fellow to lead a project on single‑photon Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). The successful candidate will develop and demonstrate LiDAR systems that integrate in‑house single‑photon detectors, aiming for high sensitivity, timing precision and spatial resolution.

Key responsibilities

• Design, assemble and align a single‑photon‑enabled scanning microscope and associated optics.
• Integrate detector modules, synchronization electronics and time‑tagging workflows.
• Develop imaging protocols, benchmark detection range, depth resolution, field‑of‑view and frame rate under varying background light.
• Perform optical and system simulations and create control‑data pipelines for acquisition, reconstruction and visualization.
• Implement advanced signal‑processing and data‑analysis methods, including event‑based and neural‑network‑assisted approaches.
• Collaborate with detector development teams and provide measurement‑driven feedback.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure safe operation of advanced microscopy and spectroscopy setups.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent experience in photonics, optical engineering, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary research teams.
• Strong publication record in low‑photon‑regime imaging or LiDAR technologies.
