Research Fellow – Tropical Ecosystem Monitoring & Simulations

About the role

The Yanyan Cheng research group at NTU’s School of Applied Sciences (ASE) seeks a Research Fellow to advance Earth system modeling and ecosystem monitoring in a Singapore NRF‑funded project. This is a one‑year fixed‑term appointment, renewable based on performance and funding.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, validate, and harmonise field and remote‑sensing imagery for tropical ecosystem monitoring.
• Develop machine‑learning and deep‑learning workflows to interpret ecosystem disturbances.
• Synthesise model simulations with multi‑source observations to diagnose land‑atmosphere feedbacks.
• Mentor research assistants and graduate students within ASE.

Required profile

• PhD in physical geography, remote sensing, ecology or a related field.
• Several years of experience in ecosystem monitoring, manipulation experiments, and diagnostic framework development.
• Strong publication record in high‑impact scientific journals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Required skills

• Advanced programming in Python; proficiency in R, NCL, MATLAB.
• Scripting with Bash and data manipulation using CDO/NCO.
• Experience with high‑performance computing (HPC) environments.
• Remote sensing data processing from satellite, airborne, and ground platforms (optical, radar, lidar).
