Research Scientist – Magnetic Sensing (1-Year Contract)

About the role

The School of Computing and Information Systems (SCIS) at Singapore Management University is looking for a Research Scientist on a 1‑year contract to drive research in magnetic sensing, signal processing and machine‑learning for mobile and pervasive computing applications.

Key responsibilities

• Design, prototype and maintain magnetic sensing hardware such as magnetometer arrays and custom PCBs, together with embedded data‑acquisition pipelines.
• Develop signal‑processing and machine‑learning algorithms for magnetic tracking, localisation and navigation.
• Plan and execute lab and field experiments, including integration with robotic platforms, and manage datasets, documentation and code repositories.
• Lead and contribute to publications in top‑tier venues (e.g., ACM MobiCom, SenSys, UbiComp/IMWUT) and deliver grant reports.
• Assist the Principal Investigator in mentoring PhD and undergraduate students and coordinate day‑to‑day lab activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• PhD in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems or a closely related field with a focus on mobile computing, pervasive sensing or cyber‑physical systems.
• At least 3 years of research experience in mobile/pervasive sensing systems (including PhD work).
• Strong publication record in mobile systems or ubiquitous computing.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small, agile academic research team.
