Software Engineer II – Object Storage (Apache Ozone)

About the role

Cloudera is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Storage Engineering team that builds Apache Ozone, a massively scalable distributed object store. You will work on core features of Apache Ozone and Apache Ratis, contribute to the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), and help shape the future of big‑data and cloud storage.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain core components of Apache Ozone and the open‑source RAFT implementation Apache Ratis.
• Contribute code and improvements to HDFS, supporting thousands of Cloudera customers worldwide.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure high availability, scalability, and performance of the storage platform.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field with relevant industry experience.
• Strong backend engineering background with expertise in Java or C++ and solid knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
• Experience designing system software, understanding computer architecture, storage, networking, and I/O subsystems.
• Clean coding habits, attention to detail, and strong oral and written communication skills.

Required skills

• Java and/or C++ programming.
• Apache Ozone and Apache Ratis (RAFT) concepts.
• Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and broader Apache Hadoop ecosystem.
• Distributed systems design, scaling, replication, consistency, and high availability.
• Familiarity with consensus protocols such as RAFT or Paxos.
