Assistant Engineer – Railway Maintenance

About the role

The Assistant Engineer will lead a team of Technical Officers in maintaining the Thomson‑East Coast Line (TEL) trains, depot and workshop equipment. This role ensures safe, reliable and comfortable journeys for commuters by overseeing preventive, corrective and overhaul activities.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate preventive maintenance (PM), corrective maintenance (CM) and overhaul (OH) tasks on rolling stock and depot assets.
• Plan staff deployment, shift rosters and resource utilisation to optimise operations.
• Verify that all work follows the latest work instructions, quality, safety and operational procedures.
• Manage spares, tools and equipment, ensuring they are calibrated and in good condition.
• Conduct train shunting and operate maintenance vehicles and equipment.
• Maintain accurate work records in the Maintenance Management System and report any abnormalities.
• Apply Kaizen (5M, 5S, 5W) methodology to eliminate waste and improve productivity.
• Provide technical support to staff, contractors and assist during incidents, accidents and emergencies.

Required profile

• Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Technology/Engineering from a recognised institution.
• Preferably five years of relevant experience in a railway environment.
• Strong understanding of maintenance practices, safety standards and quality procedures.
