Consultant, Central Tuberculosis Laboratory

About the role

Singapore General Hospital's Department of Microbiology is the largest microbiology department in Singapore, offering diagnostic services in bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology and parasitology, including molecular diagnostics. Its Central Tuberculosis Laboratory processes more than 80,000 specimens a year in a purpose-built BSL3/BSL2+ facility that handles 80% of the national TB workload, and is moving toward whole genome sequencing for TB diagnosis. The lab also performs TB immunology and identification and susceptibility testing of non-tuberculous Mycobacteria. The post is open to a suitably qualified pathologist.

Key responsibilities

• Help lead a team of 30 staff and 2 consultants, including the post holder.
• Take responsibility for diagnostic mycobacteriology.
• Contribute to education, including mentoring junior doctors.
• Contribute to research and administration.

Required profile

• Basic medical degree and FRCPath or FRCPA in Microbiology (or equivalent).
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in a TB laboratory is preferred.
• Ability to obtain specialist accreditation and registration in Singapore.

Required skills

• Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS)/whole genome sequencing (WGS) is an advantage.
