Junior Medical Laboratory Technologist

About the role

The Junior Medical Laboratory Technologist processes and analyses patient specimens for diagnosis, prevention, prognosis and treatment of disease, and enters, reviews and releases specimen data in the laboratory information system. Specimens include blood, urine, other body fluids and tissue. The role supports Medical Laboratory Technologists, Senior Medical Laboratory Technologists and pathologists through the total test process (pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical).

Key responsibilities

• Receive test requests and specimens, and enter orders into the laboratory information system (LIS)
• Perform testing of patient specimens
• Prepare test requests and specimens for dispatch to referral laboratories and follow up on reports so they appear in LIS and NGEMR in a timely way
• Assist in intra-departmental audits and external quality assurance programmes
• Check billing and perform daily billing reconciliation, including amendments
• Manage inventory of consumable items
• Answer calls about patient results and service enquiries
• Follow laws, regulations and hospital policies, including the Personal Data Protection Act (2012), cybersecurity rules and safe handling of biohazardous waste
• Perform other duties assigned in the laboratory

Required profile

• Minimum of 5 GCE "O" levels or equivalent
• Diploma in biomedical science, ITE certificate or equivalent
• No clinical laboratory experience required
• Shift work and exposure to biological and chemical hazards
