Mechanical Design Engineer - Barrage Rehabilitation

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join its team for a key barrage rehabilitation project. The role covers the assessment, design and rehabilitation of mechanical gate systems, hoists and associated equipment, supporting the project team in delivering safe, reliable and practical solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct condition assessments of barrage gates, pocket gates, head regulator gates, hoists and associated mechanical equipment.
• Review existing drawings, maintenance records, operating history and inspection results to identify mechanical condition and rehabilitation needs.
• Assess and design radial and vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts and associated components.
• Develop rehabilitation, refurbishment and replacement options, and prepare mechanical designs, drawings, specifications and BOQs.
• Support technical specifications, bidding documents, procurement, contractor submissions, fabrication inspections, testing and commissioning.
• Provide technical input to barrage safety, feasibility, detailed design and other project reports, working with the wider multidisciplinary team.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; a Master's degree is an advantage.
• At least 15 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 5 years designing, rehabilitating or maintaining gates, hoists and mechanical equipment for dams, barrages or major hydraulic infrastructure.
• Experience with radial/vertical-lift gates, hoisting systems, trunnions, seals, embedded parts and NDT/condition assessment.
• Good knowledge of international standards such as BS, ASTM and EN.
• Experience with World Bank or other MDB-funded infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
• Good communication, documentation, coordination and teamwork skills.
