Principal Software Engineer - Compliance Technology

About the role

PayPal is hiring a Principal Software Engineer in its Compliance technology area. This is a senior individual contributor role combining hands-on software engineering, architecture leadership, cloud modernization and practical use of AI. The engineer shapes technology direction while staying accountable for the design, development and delivery of critical Compliance programs.

Key responsibilities

• Increase the results and effectiveness of software engineers in a large domain and set the technology roadmap for it.
• Provide advice and counsel to senior executives, influencing multi-year business strategies.
• Take initiative on ambiguous and unfamiliar situations, using discovery and exploratory research to make decisions.
• Identify themes and trends across projects and teams, and find broadly impactful improvements.
• Decide when to adopt industry-standard solutions versus building novel ones, and mentor others to raise technical standards.
• Lead the architecture, design and delivery of complex, high-impact Compliance programs across multiple engineering teams.
• Stay hands-on through technical design, prototyping, code reviews, troubleshooting and delivery of production-quality solutions.
• Define and execute cloud modernization strategies for Compliance platforms, covering scalable services, APIs, data platforms, automation, observability, security and resilience.
• Deliver practical applications of AI, generative AI and intelligent automation across Compliance products, operations and engineering workflows.
• Translate ambiguous business and regulatory needs into clear technical solutions and executable delivery plans.
• Simplify platforms, increase reuse and partner with senior executives and technical leaders on technology strategy and investment decisions.

Required profile

• 10+ years of relevant experience.
• Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
