Project Manager (English Speaking) – Japan

About the role

We are looking for an English‑speaking Project Manager to lead and support engineering projects in Japan. The role works closely with senior management, clients and multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Senior Project Manager with business strategy, cost and profit analysis, and preparation of fee proposals.
• Conduct feasibility studies and develop project schedules, adjusting plans as needed.
• Prepare and present project reports for management and clients.
• Oversee fiscal and commercial management to achieve target margins.
• Monitor construction, installation and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications.
• Develop long‑term relationships with existing clients and identify new business opportunities.
• Support tendering, procurement of contractors and equipment.
• Coordinate engineering services and deliver concept and detailed designs.
• Implement risk and performance monitoring through internal controls.
• Mentor junior PMO members and produce technical white papers.

Required profile

• BSc/BEng in an engineering discipline or equivalent professional experience.
• Membership of a relevant engineering institute; Chartered Engineer status preferred.
• Extensive experience in specification design for various building types.
• Proven ability to manage projects internationally (experience abroad desirable).
• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, contract law and Japanese regulations/codes.
• Excellent presentation, leadership and meeting facilitation skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office applications, especially Word and Excel.
• Ability to perform calculations and develop spreadsheets for project analysis.
• Understanding of BS standards and Japanese building codes.
• Experience with invoicing, credit control and project budgeting.
