Research Assistant (Aquaculture)

About the role

The School of Applied Science at Republic Polytechnic is looking for a Research Assistant focused on aquaculture. The successful candidate will work on life science research projects, mentor students and support the preparation of scientific outputs, and will be employed on a contract basis.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and carry out life science R&D experiments and routine operations centred on aquaculture, including husbandry, fish breeding, developmental biology, transcriptomics, routine molecular biology techniques, operation optimisation, diagnostics, health and genetics.
• Work with the project leader and co-project leaders to achieve the aims of the research projects.
• Mentor students involved in final year projects, internships, short-term work attachments and similar programmes.
• Analyse and interpret research data, review scientific literature and help prepare scientific reports, presentations and research manuscripts for publication.
• Support the procurement of consumables and equipment together with lab management.

Required profile

• Relevant qualification in life science, aquaculture, agriculture or molecular biology.
• Experience in aquaculture operations and/or research is an added advantage.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build working relationships at all levels.
• Sound planning, organising and multi-tasking skills, with a strong sense of responsibility for completing duties on time.

Required skills

• Proficiency in IT skills.
• Good documentation skills, laboratory techniques, research and data analysis skills.

The successful candidate will be employed on a contract basis and will be based either fully or on a rotational basis at one of the local partner institutions.
