Research Assistant – Multiplexed Fluorescent Nanosensor Project

About the role

The National Institute of Education invites applications for a 6‑month Research Assistant contract in the Natural Sciences & Science Education Department. The role supports a medical‑technology translation project developing a multiplexed fluorescent nanosensor array for rapid gut‑health biomarker detection.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct systematic optical assays, including fluorescence and absorbance measurements, to evaluate nanosensor array responses to target gut‑health biomarkers and metabolites.
• Perform BSL‑2 laboratory operations, preparing biofluids and chemicals, running routine biological sample assays, and maintaining strict biosafety protocols using Class II Biological Safety Cabinets.
• Record, analyze, and document experimental data to support device optimisation and translational milestones.
• Assist in translating bench data for venture‑design workshops, startup commercialisation activities, and clinical partner updates.
• Support lab maintenance, equipment setup, reagent inventory, and biosafety compliance.
• Carry out any additional administrative duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
• Careful and systematic approach to laboratory work.
• Reliability in adhering closely to established experimental protocols.
• Proactive, eager to learn and able to work independently after training.
• Strong interest in deep‑tech commercialization and venture design.

Required skills

• Hands‑on experience in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL‑2) laboratory and operation of Class II Biological Safety Cabinets.
• Experience with biological assays, biofluids, or metabolite biosensing.
• Proficiency in data‑analysis tools such as Excel, Origin, and Python.
• Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques including fluorescence, Raman, and UV‑Vis spectrophotometry.
