Research Assistant (Paleoseismology & Levelling Data)
ntu · NTU Main Campus
Job description
About the role
Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is hiring five Research Assistants to support an integrated programme covering fault assessment, seismic and geodetic monitoring, earthquake physics, ground-motion modelling, site response, exposure and vulnerability, and probabilistic seismic hazard and risk assessment. The new hires join a multidisciplinary team across the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). The listing covers two positions: four Research Assistants in Paleoseismology and Neotectonics and one in Levelling Data Investigation.
Key responsibilities
- Paleoseismology: analyse geological data and digital terrain models to refine fault locations before trenching, and assist with preliminary geophysical field investigations
- Support paleoseismic field work, including trench excavation, wall cleaning, gridding, surveying, field documentation, permitting and logistics
- Assist trench loggers with wall logging and photographic documentation, and help with sedimentological and stratigraphic observations
- Collect, label and catalogue geological samples, process them and prepare materials for geochronological dating and sedimentological analysis
- Maintain field records, photographs and sample registers, and mentor undergraduate interns on desk-based data analysis
- Levelling data: compile, review and evaluate levelling datasets, digitise and quality-control historical levelling records, and integrate levelling, InSAR and GNSS observations into deformation fields, strain-rate maps and geodetic models
- Prepare technical reports, take part in research meetings and support other EOS research activities
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in geology, geoscience, Earth science, geotechnical engineering, Earth science, Geophysics, Geodesy or a related field
- For paleoseismology: basic knowledge of geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy and geomorphology, with considerable prior field experience strongly preferred; entry-level candidates are welcome
- For levelling data: proficiency in computational methods, with experience in MATLAB and/or Python
- Good written and oral communication, able to contribute to technical reports reviewed by external experts
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively under demanding field conditions and strict timelines, with excellent organisation and time management
- Willingness to perform demanding physical fieldwork, including extended periods in trenches in warm tropical regions, and to travel for fieldwork
Candidates apply by submitting a CV, a one-page cover letter describing research interests and relevant experience, and the contact details of 2-3 references; publications may be linked in the CV or cover letter. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
