Research Assistant (Physics)

About the role

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at NTU seeks a Research Assistant to support cutting‑edge projects in structured light, topological photonics, and 2D‑material‑based optical systems. The role combines optical simulation, experimental characterization, data analysis, and general laboratory support to advance NTU’s photonics research agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct theoretical design and electromagnetic simulations of optical devices using tools such as FDTD and COMSOL.
• Perform optical experiments, including light‑field measurement, spectroscopy, and microscopy.
• Assist in sample preparation, micro/nano‑fabrication, and basic cleanroom processes for 2D‑material devices.
• Analyse experimental data, prepare reports, manuscripts, and presentations for internal and external dissemination.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure safety compliance, and support day‑to‑day lab operations and procurement.

Required profile

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Physics or a related field.
• 1–2 years of research experience in optics/photonics, with hands‑on work in structured light, thin‑film optics, micro/nano optics, or 2D materials.

Required skills

• Optical simulation software: FDTD, COMSOL, MATLAB.
• Experimental characterization tools: ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, AFM, SEM, EBL.
• Technical expertise in optical thin‑film simulation, micro/nano fabrication, optical path construction, data analysis, and programming (MATLAB/Python).
