Research Associate – Paleoseismology, Fault‑Zone Analysis & Seismology Engineer

About the role

Join a multidisciplinary research team at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, to support integrated programmes in fault assessment, seismic monitoring, earthquake physics and probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. Four positions are available: two Research Associate roles (Paleoseismology & Neotectonics and Fault‑Zone Analysis) and one Research Engineer II (Seismology).

Key responsibilities

• Conduct field‑based paleoseismic trench investigations, including fault mapping, trench‑wall logging, stratigraphic interpretation and sample collection.
• Perform laboratory characterisation of rock and fault‑zone materials (geochemical, mineralogical, microstructural, geomechanical and geochronological testing) and integrate results into fault‑zone interpretations.
• Develop, integrate and optimise seismic data‑processing workflows into operational software, and contribute to AI‑assisted earthquake monitoring and early‑warning algorithms.
• Prepare technical reports, site documentation, conference abstracts and scientific manuscripts; mentor students and assist with data management.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in geology, geoscience, Earth science, geotechnical or related engineering discipline.
• At least one year of relevant experience (field trenching, laboratory analysis or software development) or equivalent research experience.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in demanding field or laboratory environments, with strong organisational and time‑management skills.

Required skills

• GIS, digital terrain modelling, mapping and drafting software, structure‑from‑motion tools.
• Laboratory techniques for sedimentology, structural geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, microstructural analysis and geochronology.
• Programming in Python (for seismic data processing and AI workflow development).
