Research Engineer II – GUI & Visualization

About the role

The Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) at Nanyang Technological University is looking for a Research Engineer II specialized in GUI and visualization. You will develop simulation tools and controller‑enhancement interfaces that enable human‑in‑the‑loop experiments for next‑generation air traffic management solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a proof‑of‑concept GUI client to display real‑time aircraft states, routes, and conflict information.
• Create interactive components such as drag‑and‑drop strip editors and coordination dialogs.
• Visualise radar and sector overlays, aircraft labels, and trajectory data using PyQt/PySide or lightweight React frameworks.
• Consume REST and WebSocket APIs from the Coordination Server for live updates.
• Collaborate with simulation and backend engineers to integrate visualisation of test aircraft trajectories.
• Develop testable UI components and logging mechanisms for scenario demonstrations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• At least 6 years of professional experience in software development.
• Strong background in building real‑time, data‑driven user interfaces.
• Experience with aviation or GIS data visualisation is a plus.

Required skills

• Proficiency with PyQt5 or PySide2.
• Experience developing front‑end applications using React.js.
• Solid knowledge of REST API integration and asynchronous communication (WebSocket, polling).
• Familiarity with GIS concepts, GeoJSON visualisation, and radar overlay techniques.
