Senior Software Engineer, Backend

About the role

You will be responsible for designing, building and maintaining one of our Payments Core (FundsCore) platforms, which includes complex backend systems and data pipelines to meet both functional and non‑functional requirements. You will contribute to Operational Excellence, mentor junior engineers, and report to an Engineering Manager II while working onsite at Grab One‑North office in Singapore.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high‑quality, scalable software applications that meet business and non‑functional requirements.
• Write clean, efficient, testable, and maintainable code to solve challenging problems in the fintech domain.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define, design, and deliver new features.
• Participate in code reviews, ensure proper technical documentation, and facilitate knowledge sharing.
• Troubleshoot and debug complex issues, providing fixes and long‑term sustainable solutions.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and the technical direction of projects.
• Ensure system reliability and availability through observability practices and mandatory on‑call rotations.
• Provide DevOps support to maintain system health and performance.
• Mentor junior engineers and interns, fostering a culture of learning.
• Stay current with industry trends and leverage Generative AI tools to enhance productivity.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
• Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures and computer science concepts.
• Fluent English communication skills.
• 5+ years of software development experience, preferably with Golang or Java.
• Experience with clean‑architecture principles, data‑driven design and large‑scale data processing.
• Proven track record building large‑scale distributed systems using DBMS, caching solutions, NoSQL databases and RESTful/gRPC services.
• Hands‑on experience with microservices, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and DevOps practices.
• Ability to implement observability, SLA, security, data‑governance and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Experience in the payments domain, especially settlement and reconciliation.
