Underwriter - Trade Credit

About the role

Markel is looking for a trade credit underwriter to underwrite its line of business within agreed business plan parameters and underwriting authority, aiming to meet agreed combined ratio targets. The role sits in a small underwriting team and involves servicing a portfolio of commercial and financial institution clients.

Key responsibilities

• Provide operational and administrative support within a small underwriting team.
• Serve a portfolio of commercial and financial institution clients.
• Analyse buyer risks financially, including country and sector analysis.
• Work across offices, liaising with colleagues in Dubai and London.
• Maintain and develop in-house systems and databases.
• Engage with business partners, including clients and business introducers.
• Help develop the Asia TCPRS portfolio and support special projects and ad-hoc duties.
• Progression leads to taking responsibility for developing your own portfolio, supported by full internal training.

Required profile

• Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a credit insurance environment, trade finance background or a rating agency as a financial/credit analyst.
• Experience of multi-buyer trade credit insurance programmes is a benefit.
• Good knowledge of regional economies and major geopolitical events affecting the business environment.
• Excellent organisational skills, able to prioritise workloads and work independently or in a team.
• Clear communication with stakeholders and business partners.

Required skills

• Risk assessment and financial analysis, including interpretation of financial information.
• Microsoft Office.
• Ability to understand and use in-house and third-party systems.
