Staff Software Engineer, Motion Planning

About the role

Join Motional’s Motion Planning team to develop cutting‑edge algorithms that enable safe, smooth, and intuitive behavior for autonomous vehicle fleets. You will work on production‑ready software that directly impacts the performance of robotaxis.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute multi‑quarter technical roadmaps and OKRs across multiple subsystems.
• Lead technical discussions, establish design processes, and review system‑level implementations.
• Own the architecture of core motion‑planning products, driving incident response and reliability improvements.
• Mentor junior and senior engineers, fostering a culture of robust documentation and continuous learning.
• Collaborate with decision‑making, prediction, and motion‑tracking teams to integrate end‑to‑end solutions.

Required profile

• 5‑7+ years of professional software development experience, preferably in C++.
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field preferred.
• Proven experience developing algorithms for motion planning, navigation, or other safety‑critical robotic systems.
• Track record of owning features from problem formulation through design, implementation, and delivery.
