Biologist, Water Quality Department (11-Month Contract)

About the role

The Water Quality Department's Aquatic Biology Laboratory is hiring a Biologist for an 11-month contract. You will work with a team to carry out routine monitoring and analysis of water samples to ensure water safety.

Key responsibilities

• Perform biological analyses of water samples, including morphological and molecular identification of phytoplankton and zooplankton, chlorophyll-a analysis, algal toxin analysis and acute toxicity tests
• Enter results into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and flag abnormalities so investigations can be launched to improve water quality
• Analyse water quality data and provide scientific and data analytics to support biological water quality monitoring
• Support research and development studies to improve the efficiency of biological monitoring, develop methods and protocols and prepare technical documents
• Manage the inventory of laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables and maintain laboratory safety

Required profile

• Degree in Aquatic Biology, Environmental Science or a related science discipline
• Experience in laboratory work is preferred
• Motivated, responsible and proactive individual
• Good written, communication and interpersonal skills
• A team player who can also work independently
