Instrument Technician, Central Sterile Support

About the role

The Instrument Technician provides sterile and reusable surgical instruments and equipment by demonstrating competence in all aspects of sterile processing. The role covers receiving, sorting, decontamination, inspection, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of sterile items to Operating Theatres, Specialist Outpatient Clinics, inpatient wards and procedural rooms, keeping the Central Sterile Support Department running safely according to standards and protocols.

Key responsibilities

• Keep the CSSD running smoothly each day, including receiving, sorting, decontamination, inspection, packing, sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments and supplies
• Make sure staff follow standards when using washer-disinfectors, dryers, ultrasonic washers and sterilizers
• Perform and evaluate sterilizer test indicators and monitor sterilization outcomes
• Manage inventory of sterile linen and surgical consumables and issue supplies accurately and on time
• Track preventive maintenance schedules for equipment and report defects, arranging repairs or replacement
• Clean storage areas and liaise with Operating Theatre nurses about instrument sets needed for procedures
• Support clinical governance, service improvement and quality assurance, and assist in keeping instrument tracking data accurate
• Mentor junior staff and take on other duties assigned by the Senior Instrument Technician, Instrument Specialist or Assistant/Deputy Director (Nursing)

Required profile

• Diploma in Engineering or relevant technical qualifications
• WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support (Sterilisation Services) is an added advantage
• At least one year of experience as an Instrument Technical Assistant or relevant CSSD/TSSU experience preferred
• Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills
• Good command of written English
