Intern - SSD Validation Engineer

About the role

Micron is offering an engineering internship focused on a mechanical hot-plug automation solution for validating solid-state drives (SSDs). The project gives the intern practical exposure to SSD technology, server hardware, mechanical design, microcontroller integration and test automation. The intern designs and demonstrates a cost-effective mechanical automation solution that enables controlled, repeatable hot-plug testing of multiple SSDs in an enterprise server, and may be considered for full-time employment after completion.

Key responsibilities

• Study SSD fundamentals, hot-plug functionality, enterprise server architecture and validation principles.
• Define functional, mechanical, electrical and safety requirements for the automation solution.
• Design and develop a mechanical fixture and actuator mechanism for controlled hot-plug insertion and removal.
• Integrate a microcontroller with the actuator and develop Python or shell-script-based automation.
• Run engineering evaluations of repeatability, device coverage, integration behaviour and solution limitations.
• Deliver a documented mechanical design, an integrated prototype, automation scripts and a technical report with a final presentation.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
• Ability to commit to a full-time internship of at least 5 months, preferably January to May 2027.
• Fundamental knowledge of computer hardware, electronics, mechanical systems or mechatronics.
• Analytical problem-solving skills and interest in hardware-software integration and failure analysis.

Required skills

• Basic programming in Python, shell scripting, microcontroller programming or a comparable language.
• Ability to interpret technical data, document findings and communicate project outcomes clearly.
• Familiarity with Micron-authorized AI-enabled tools for code review, log exploration, result summarisation or documentation is beneficial but not essential.
