Operating Theatre Technician

About the role

The Operating Theatre Technician provides a safe and clean environment for the surgical patient. The role is split into primary duties (about 80%) focused on preparing and maintaining the operating theatre, and secondary duties (about 20%) covering housekeeping and patient transport.

Key responsibilities

• Check suction and diathermy machines, and operating lights, for cleanliness and good working order.
• Clean, check and prepare the operating table and accessories, and prepare the operating room for each scheduled patient.
• Assist in moving patients safely between trolley and operating table, and help position them.
• Assist the surgeon with the application of the tourniquet, adjust and focus the lights, and help nurses with patient care.
• Perform a daily inventory check of positioning aids and accessories.
• Clean the operating room between cases within 15 minutes, clear soiled linen and surgical waste to the disposal room, and cap disposable suction liners tightly before putting them in biohazard bags.
• Maintain daily housekeeping of the OT suite (operating room, prep room, scrub room, anaesthesia room and sluice room).
• Do terminal cleaning at the end of the list or after infected cases as per protocol, and stay in the theatre to assist the surgical team when needed.
• Secondary duties: keep the pantry tidy, transport patients between the ward and the OT, clean OT equipment such as the tourniquet and light source weekly, and carry out any other assigned tasks.

Required profile

• WSQ Higher Certificate in Healthcare Support (Operating Theatre Support) or relevant working experience as an Operating Theatre Technician.
• Initiative and a willingness to learn.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
