Research Assistant – 1 Year Contract

About the role

The Singapore Management University Urban Institute is seeking a Research Assistant on a one‑year contract to support interdisciplinary urban research across Southeast Asia. The role combines qualitative and quantitative research activities, fieldwork, and project coordination.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain a database of contacts; conduct snowball sampling and in‑depth interviews.
• Transcribe, code, and analyse interview data.
• Design surveys, liaise with panel providers, clean and analyse quantitative data.
• Carry out primary fieldwork in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City and other locations.
• Support project management: coordinate with principal investigators, assist with IRB approvals, organise stakeholder workshops, and prepare annual reports.
• Perform ad‑hoc tasks that contribute to project success.

Required profile

• Undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s) completed by the start date.
• Prior research experience, preferably in Singapore or Southeast Asia.
• Strong organisational and detail‑oriented mindset.
• Excellent academic writing and research abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams spanning social sciences, computing and urban research.
